Windows Phone 8.1 is coming: Until then, enjoy some new tips for good ole’ WP8

Nokia Lumia Icon

Windows Phone 8 launched in late 2012. It was another roll of the dice for Microsoft in the mobile space and it was fairly well received by the tech press. It’s a slick platform that’s packed with features and customization options. We’ve already discussed how to take a screenshot on a Windows Phone and we looked at five ways to customize your Windows Phone 8 start screen, but there’s always more to uncover.
In this roundup we’ll explore some Windows Phone 8 tips and tricks. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments at the end.
Updated on 4-03-2014 by Simon Hill: Updated to add tips on how to translate text, how to reply to calls with text messages, how to access multitasking, how to filter your contacts, how to access scientific calculator, and how to quickly swipe through photos.

How to Customize your Start Screen

You can change the size of tiles by holding your finger on them to activate edit mode. You can drag it around and tap the arrow at the bottom right to change the size. You can change the background color in Settings > Theme. Be sure to check out our recommended ways to customize your Start Screen, as well.

How to use your Unified inbox

With WP8 you have the ability to merge your email accounts into one manageable inbox. Go to your Mail app and tap the ellipses in the lower right hand corner and choose link inboxes. You can choose to link as many as you like, so it’s possible to merge a bunch and still keep some separate. You can always unlink them again.

How to use built-in Shazam-clone ‘Name that tune’

You don’t need the Shazam app to recognize a tune you like. Windows Phone 8 has music recognition built-in. All you have to do is tap Search and then choose the music icon (it’s a musical note) and it will listen for a few seconds and then tell you what song is playing and provide you with a link to buy it in the Windows Phone Store.

How to enable Kids Corner

There’s no need to install a parental control app because WP8 has Kid’s Corner. You’ll find the option in the Settings menu and it allows you to dictate exactly what content is available when Kid’s Corner is activated. It allows you to give your little angel your smartphone without fear that they’ll send a text or email, phone someone, or do something else crazy.

How to conserve battery life

If your battery is getting dangerously low, you can head into Settings and select battery saver. It closes background apps and puts a stop to automatic syncing so that you can squeeze a little extra time out of that battery. If you tap the Advanced option in battery saver then you can set it to come on automatically when your battery dips below a certain percentage.

How to share your location

When you write a text, you can actually add your current location to the message. Simply tap the paperclip icon and choose your location. If your friend has a WP8 device it will open in their Maps app, otherwise it will open in their browser.

How to use keyboard shortcuts

When you are typing, you can hold your finger down on a key to get more options to pop up instead of jumping into the symbols keyboard. You can also double tap the space bar to create a period and a space for the next sentence. You’ll find word suggestions pop up as you type. If you type a word that isn’t recognized you can always add it to your dictionary by holding down your finger on it and choosing the plus symbol when it pops up.

How to stop accidental photos

Having a hardware button for quick camera launch can be handy, but you might also end up with some pocket interior shots. If you want to disable the button you can do it in the Photos app settings where you’ll find an option to prevent accidental camera launch when the phone is locked.

How to scan QR codes, Microsoft tags, or translate text

If you press the Search button on your phone you can also use it to scan QR codes or Microsoft tags. All you have to do is tap the Vision icon (it’s an eye) and then point your phone’s camera at the code in question. You can also use this function to scan text and then translate it into a new language, so it’s potentially handy for trips abroad.

How to quickly send out apologies if you’re running late

If you’ve entered appointments into your calendar along with attendees then you can quickly send messages when you are running late. Just go to the relevant appointment in your calendar and tap the rushing person icon. A draft message will pop up and you can edit it and set the recipients, or just hit send.

How to hide your caller ID

You can decide who should see your caller ID when you make calls – everyone, your contacts, or no one at all. To change this just go into your caller history, tap the ellipses at the bottom right, and hit Settings. Then choose who gets to see your caller ID by default.

How to change the text size

If you find yourself squinting at the screen of your Window Phone then you should really consider resizing the text. Go into Settings > Ease of access and you’ll find five different size settings for the text.

How to use voice controls

You won’t find Google Now or Siri on Windows Phone 8, but it does support voice controls. Start by going into Settings > Speech and make sure that you have the correct language pack installed. You use it by holding down the Start button until the prompt pops up. Now you can command your WP8 device to launch apps with the command “Open Facebook,”or phone a contact with the command “Phone Jenny”. You can also search on Bing by prefacing your command with “Find” or “Search.” Tap the Help symbol or say “Help” on the Speech screen to learn about more options.

How to change search engine

If you don’t like Bing then you can fire up Internet Explorer and tap More at the top right (three dots) to open up the menu and select Settings > Advanced settings and then change your Default search provider.

How to backup in the cloud

You get a free 7GB of storage space with Microsoft’s SkyDrive, so you may as well backup those precious photos, videos, and documents. For an individual photo or video you can just tap More and then choose Save to SkyDrive. If you would rather just automatically back up photos, then go to More in the Photos app, and choose Settings > SkyDrive, where you’ll find an automatic upload option. You can save individual documents by tapping Add when you have the document open. You don’t need the SkyDrive app to use the service on your Windows Phone 8 device, but it does help you organize things and it’s free.

How to avoid going over data limits

Microsoft has included an app called Data Sense in Windows Phone 8 that can be used to set data limits and review your usage. You have to set it up with your billing date and monthly allowance and then it will be able to warn you when the limit is approaching. You can even set it up to automatically restrict background data usage. Load up Data Sense and tap Settings to see your full range of options. If Data Sense is not available on your phone then your carrier probably blocked it (AT&T does not currently support it).

How to use NFC

You can share photos, videos, songs, documents, web links, business cards, contacts, and even apps and games using the NFC (Near Field Communication) feature. As long as both devices support NFC and they are unlocked, place them together and choose More > Share > Tap + Send on the relevant file. You can make sure this feature is turned on via Settings > Tap + send > NFC sharing.
You can also use NFC tags to automate features on your device with a simple tap. Nokia offers tags and the Nokia NFC Writer app which enables you to program a tag or sticker, so that you can tap your device on it and automatically share content, bring up a web page, call someone, or complete a number of other actions.

How to translate text using your camera

Did you know that you can translate text on a sign, menu, or even a newspaper? This can be super-handy when you’re adventuring abroad. Press the Search button (magnifying glass icon) and then tap Vision (eyeball icon) and point your camera at the text you want to translate. Now tap Scan text and tap the boxes round the words you want to translate, tap Search and then tap Translate and choose a language.

How to respond to call with quick text

If you can’t take an incoming call right now, but you want to respond, simply slide up and tap the text reply option. You can choose one of the default messages or you can create your own. If you want to edit the default messages to suit you, head into Settings > Applications > Phone and tap on edit replies to create up to four custom messages.

How to quickly switch to or close apps

You can access the multitasking menu by holding down the Back button. Swipe through your recently used apps and tap on the one you want to load it right up. Tap on the cross at the top right corner to close anything that you don’t need to be running right now.

How to filter your contacts

When you pull in a large group of contacts from a bunch of different sources, maybe some from the SIM card, some from a Facebook account, some from Twitter, and some from Hotmail, you can end up with a long list in your People app and many of them will be people you never really intend to call. Fire up the People Hub and tap the Menu button then go to Settings > Filter my contact list and you can thin the herd and make it easier to find the people you really want to call.

How to access scientific calculator

If you fire up the calculator app in portrait view, you’ll see a basic calculator, but if you turn your Windows Phone to landscape view it will turn into a scientific calculator. If you want to access even more options then turn your phone the opposite way in landscape view and you’ve got a whole new set of expanded options.

How to swipe through your photos

You can swipe through photos one by one, but it can take forever to find that one shot you’re looking for. Instead of the slow method select a photo, rotate to landscape view, and then pinch to zoom out. Your photos will be displayed in a continuous filmstrip which you can swipe through much more quickly.

Tips and Tricks: Mobile Phone Troubleshooting

Basically, how to use your phone like a boss…

In this issue of Steve writes a blog, I will be demonstrating a few extremely useful troubleshooting methods by using a mobile phone. Primarily, I focus around a rooted Android Operating system due to its ease of use and my personal preference, but other devices may work for most of these tips as well. Read on and enjoy!

Test Hosted Website Public Access

Is your site not loading from your home, work, corporate or other network? Do this:
  1. Turn off your WiFi
  2. Load your site on your Mobile Phone.
I prefer to do this in Chrome. Since it is my main Browser on all devices, all my credentials are saved on any device I am signed into with my Google Account. If the site loads via the mobile network, then the issue you are experiencing is likely a local networking issue. See if you can load other websites, ping your own site or browse your site by IP.

You Can Ping from a Mobile Phone

Just load your favorite Terminal Emulator and run basic Linux Commands all day, such as ping. Do yourself a favor and either get a Terminal Keyboard installed or use a Bluetooth Keyboard. It makes working on Android much easier for these tasks. Terminal Emulator If you are not Linux inclined, fret not. The beauty of Smartphones shines through—there is an App for everything. My favorite app for quick Ping and HTTP tests is HTTPing. This tool will let your run a ping, return Status codes and measure latency. Just remember that Mobile Data Networks Latency is generally pretty high when you run this tool on the go. And here’s a fairly handy link if you need to check Status codes. HTTPing

Speaking of the Terminal Emulator

You can do much more than Ping. Mobile Phones are just small computers, and with the right tools you can also run:
  • Nslookup
  • SSH
  • WGET
  • Telnet
  • FTP
  • Traceroute
  • Many more
One of those “Right Tools” is Tiny Utils. This allows you to run commands you are used to having while working at a GNU/Linux Terminal. Get your research on: check out the full list of BusyBox commands. Some commands may require Root Access. If you are unfamiliar with Root and basic GNU/Linux commands, steer clear and download App’s with specific purposes instead.

7 cool tricks every Android phone user should know

Android is pretty cool. There are things you can do with an Android phone that iOS and Windows Phone users can only dream about. With a little imagination the possibilities are nearly infinite. Since there are so many different things you can do with an Android phone it’s inevitable to be unaware of some basic tricks. We’ve compiled a list of seven cool tricks that every Android user should know.

1. Do a Google search from anywhere

google any
One of the best things about having an Android device is the tight integration of Google services. In the latest versions of the Google Search app for Android they have enabled users to do searches from anywhere. All you have to do is turn on your phone and say “Ok, Google.” It’s fast and super handy when you want to quickly find something. Here’s how to do it.
  1. Open the Google Search app
  2. Go to Settings > Voice
  3. Go to “Ok Google Detection”
  4. Enable “From any screen”
  5. Train the app to recognize your voice

2. Make your phone snappy with faster animations

One of the most common complaints about Android is “lagginess.” For whatever reason Google has never been able to get Android on the same buttery smooth level as iOS or even Windows Phone. In the last few versions they have made some serious improvements, but if you still feel like your phone is a little laggy there is a trick for speeding things up. Google has hidden some secret developer options inside the Settings. Inside the secret developer options is settings for animation and transition speed. Here’s how to speed things up.
  1. Open Settings > About phone
  2. Scroll down and tap on “Build number” 7 times
  3. Now go back to Settings and you should see new “Developer options”
  4. Adjust the window and transition animation scales to .5x or turn them off completely

3. Locate and wipe your lost phone

Losing your phone is one of the worst things that can happen. These devices contain sensitive information and private data. If your phone falls into the wrong hands it could put you in a world of trouble. There are apps you can download to help in the event of a lost phone, but in order for them to work you need to have them installed before something bad happens. Luckily there is a built-in way to find your lost phone and even wipe all of your personal data.
  1. Double-check to make sure Android Device Manager is installed
  2. Go to google.com/android/devicemanager
  3. Select your phone from the menu
  4. Now you can see the location, ring it, lock it, or erase it
Check out our in-depth guide on how to find lost or stolen phones.

4. Scrub through songs on lockscreen

scrub lock
When you’re playing music on your phone the lockscreen gets taken over with beautiful album art and media controls. These controls allow you to go back, play/pause, or skip to the next song without having to fully unlock the device. However, that’s not all you can do with those buttons. A little known feature is the ability to scrub through a song from the lockscreen. It’s stupidly easy to do, but not an obvious feature.
  1. With music playing, long-press on the media control buttons
  2. Scrub through the song with the newly present bar

5. Put widgets on the lockscreen

Widgets have long been a selling point of Android, and remain to be a unique feature of the OS. Most people love to deck out their homescreen with widgets, but you don’t have to stop there. Ever since Android 4.—— the lockscreen can also be a place for widgets. This gives users quick access to pertinent information without even unlocking the device. Lockscreen widgets are not turned on by default. Here’s how to do it.
  1. Go to Settings > Security
  2. Tap “Enable widgets”
  3. Go to the lockscreen and swipe to the left screen
  4. Tap the [+] button and choose a widget

6. Save battery in the GPS settings

If you don’t rely on location data a lot you could be saving some precious battery life. Android has a built-in setting that allows you to determine how you want your phone to find your location. There are three different modes: high accuracy, battery saving, and device only. This trick isn’t for everyone, but if you don’t care about location it’s a nice way to save some juice.
  1. Go to Settings > Location
  2. Tap on “Mode”
  3. Select your desired location mode

7. Change what app launches with the home button shortcut

launcher
On devices with software buttons you can launch Google Search by swiping up on the home button. Some devices with hardware buttons allow you to do this with a long-press on the home button. An app called Home Button Launcher allows you to use this gesture to launch any app you would like. This gives you quick access to your favorite apps from anywhere on the phone. Here’s how to do it.
  1. Download Home Button Launcher from Google Play
  2. Swipe up or long press the home button
  3. Tap Home Button Launcher and make it default
  4. Tap the menu icon and select “Add”
  5. Choose all the app you wish to appear in the shortcut

What are your tricks?

We’re sure some of you veteran Android users are aware of all these tricks. Be sure to show them to all your Android-toting friends. Which tricks do you use that are not well-known? Have you discovered any tricks of your own? Share your favorites with us in the comments below!

Cell Phone Tips and Tricks

Several Internet based applications are designed to work with your cell phone text messaging service. This is a convenient way to schedule reminders for appointments, manage your schedule, find driving locations, and even get traffic alerts at designated commute times during the day. Spend a little bit of time to get familiar with these web based applications and you will have a powerful personal administrative assistant in your pocket.
Driving Directions
Google:
if your cell phone does not already have a GPS feature, and if you find yourself in need of directions from point to point, you can get MapQuest style driving directions through your cell phone by using the Short Message Service (SMS) capabilities.
  1. Compose a text message with the starting address and the destination address
  2. Send your message to Google (466453)
  3. Within a minute, Google will send back a text message containing turn by turn driving directions
I know that you want to see if this works, so go ahead and try it now, I will wait right here and hold this place for you in the article.
Tell Me:
Would you prefer to have voice commands?
  1. Dial 1-800-555-TELL, that's 1-800-555-8355
  2. Follow the voice prompts and when you are finished the service will send the driving directions to your phone.
The Tellme service can also retrieve business listings, news, weather reports, and other information and updates.
Save 1-800-555-8355 in your cell phone, just in case you need this service when traveling on business, with friends, or generally in need of directions.
MapQuest:
Perhaps you like to look up your driving directions in advance on your PC at home or office. If you use MapQuest, once you have looked up the directions on-line, you can send the turn by turn instructions to your cell phone by using the "Send to Cell" option. This is a handy alternative to printed directions and a convenient tool if you have already looked up the directions on-line anyway.
On-Line Administrative Assistance
Keep track of your appointments and integrate your cell phone with the free on-line Google Calendar service (www.google.com/calendar)
This free calendar service enables you to manage your schedule, meetings, and appointments. You can share your calendar on-line with co-workers, add events from the web, and much more. This service can also send courtesy reminders and updates with important information to your cell phone.
Start by creating a Google Calendar and register your cell phone on your Google Calendar Account. Click the Settings Link and choose Notifications, then follow the registration instructions. Google will send a text message to your phone with a verification code that must be entered on the calendar site as a one time confirmation procedure. When you have completed this step, choose the notifications that you want to receive via SMS (text messages). Notifications can include event reminders, new invitations, meetings, or general reminders that you maintain within your Google Calendar.
Once your calendar is set up in Google, you can access upcoming events through your phone by sending a text message to GVENT (48368) with one of the following commands:
  • NEXT for a notification of your next appointment
  • DAY for a notification of the entire day's schedule
  • NDAY for a notification of tomorrow's schedule
Start a Google Calendar to coordinate your schedule. Share it with co-workers, friends, or family. Use the Google Calendar notifications to send you convenient reminders with relevant text of upcoming appointments, and turn your cell phone into a pocket administrative assistant.
Need to Find a Hot Spot?
Use your cell phone to sniff out Public Access WiFi Hot Spots so you can get on-line with your notebook computer.
  1. Create a text message that says "wifi" and the city, ZIP code, or area code, then send it to 4INFO (44636)
  2. The 4INFO service will send you a return message with names, addresses, and phone numbers of the three nearest locations, and whether they are free or not.
  3. Need more listings? Just reply to the message with an "m" for more listings in your area.
Timely Traffic Alerts
If you would like to receive scheduled traffic updates to prepare you for the commute into work, or the commute home, go to www.traffic.com and sign up for traffic alerts. You can receive traffic alerts automatically sent by text message to your phone at the designated times. Alternatively, you can dial the Traffic Line (866-698-7232) to get reports for your city and even specific roads.
Emergency
The worldwide Emergency Number for Mobile Telephones is 112. On most phones, the number 112 can be dialed even when the keypad is locked.
Hidden Battery Power
if your cell phone is running low on power and you need a short term boost, dial the keys *3370# and your cell phone will restart with reserve power and show a 50% increase in battery power. The reserve power will recharge the next time that you recharge your phone.
Free Directory Service
If you do not want to be charged for calling directory assistance from your cell phone, dial (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 and you will not incur any charges for directory assistance. Program this number into your phone for future convenient reference.
If you are going to carry your phone with you, why not make it work for you?

Finalists Emerge for MTN Project Fame Season 7

Moulding ordinary people into superstars is a process you can describe as herculean & MTN Project Fame has not done badly in that regard. Over the years, Iyanya, Praize, Chidimma, iMike, Kesse, Monica and many others have been transformed by the mastery and professionalism of Project Fame’s Faculty members and judges with the support of MTN.

After eight intensive weeks of competition, the finalists, among whom the latest superstar will emerge, have been announced. Kindly meet them after the cut...

Emeka (6) – A student of Abia State University. His slow start notwithstanding, he has put in so much work to become a true contender for the ultimate prize. He had one of his best performances when he rendered Flavour’s ‘Ada Ada’.

Left: Geoffrey (8) – He stands out for his vocal quality and commands the judges’ respect for being able to deliver almost perfectly every song. He showed mastery and character that astounded even Paul ‘Play’ Dairo who described him ‘a superstar’ the day he performed one of Majek Fashek’s hit songs.

Right: Christian (1) – Except for the votes that have not been coming his way – God knows why – the Ghanaian is truly an entertainer. His calm is almost ingenious and, besides that, his character is outstanding. He showed that last Friday when he performed once again Tuface’s ‘African Queen.

Left: Ugo (18) – The judges never stopped mentioning how hard this lanky young man works. Ever since he sang ‘Under the Surface’ and came in for the judges sticks, he seemed to have improved with every performance.

Right: Ruky (15) – This lively Port Harcourt lady is incredible. Whether she is rendering a song by Kcee, Tiwa Savage or Tuface, she never allowed herself to be intimidated by the demand of each song. She is always on point. She has done so well and has never been on probation.

Left: Debbie (4) – She had a rough time last week when she sang Tuface’s ‘If Love is a Crime’ but she made up for that on Sunday. TY-Mix remarked that the ‘slim-shady’ is still searching for her true vocal range. With a place in the finals already, one only hopes she finds that.

Right: Clement (2) – A lot of people wish this lad from Ghana did not sustain the injury that confined him to the wheel-chairs for weeks. Though he walks on crutches now, his determination is enviable. He provided sufficient cover-up, in terms of vocal dexterity, for his disability and roused the feeling of sympathy when he sang Michael Bolton’s ‘Back on My Feet Again’.

Daniela (80) – If only those who couldn’t make it through the auditions would embrace the Wild-Card. It was first Ella but this extraordinary lady is charging up to beat the record. Having spent lesser time in the academy than the rest of the contestants, a place in the final is already a big leap for her.

Hence, the power lies in the hands of the viewers and the fans of the contestants to select who they think deserve to be the real superstar of MTN Project Fame West Africa Season 7. Viewers can text their favourite contestant’s unique number to 306 or 1745 (in Ghana) to help boost their chances of winning the competition.
